The Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods College Golf team played their last match of the fall season at the Centre Invitational in Danville, KY on Oct. 2, 2010.
The match ended with a team score of 381 and they placed 4th. The team’s overall performance this season has been solid.
They have come a long way and have shown a lot of improvement in their game.
Some of the players still believe that there is room for more individual improvement.
“I liked the invitational a lot and I’m looking forward to playing again. The course was pretty easy except for being blind on every hole and hoping our ball landed in a good spot,” said freshman Michaley Kinser.
As for improvement on her game, Kinser said that she slowly improved and she believes that the team improved this season as well.
Kinser scored a 108 at the match.
Danielle Rosselli, junior, scored a 98 overall at the Centre Invitational.
“This season hasn’t gone so well for me,” said Rosselli. “At first I didn’t think I would like the invitational because the golf course was really hilly but I think that if we played the same course next year I would like it; it was different but fun!”
The other players’ scores were as follows: Katelyn Gosnell 93, Faith Jones 106, and Kelsey Fuqua 84.           The SMWC Golf team will play their next matches during the spring season starting on March 9th.

The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College golf team went up against DePauw University and ten other schools in an invitational on Sept. 25 and 26. The invitational was hosted by DePauw at Deer Creek Golf Course in Belleville.
The team had great weather for the first day, but the second day brought low temperatures and frosty playing conditions.
The overall results for the two day event were good, but a few members of the team felt that they could have done better. The team finished 12th in the invitational.
“I know that my score for me could have been better than what it was,” freshman Faith Jones said.
Day two showed an improvement on most of the scores, despite the poorer weather conditions.
“I think we did better on the second day because we were more familiar with the course,” said Michaley Kinser, freshman.  “Instead of the course being a shock, we knew what was coming and we were more comfortable.”
The total team score for both days came out to 785, with the team total improving more on the second day.
Freshman Kelsey Fuqua scored the team low with a 185.
As for the rest of the team, sophomore Katelyn Gosnell scored 186, junior Danielle Rosselli scored 206, Jones scored 208, Kinser scored 236. Freshman Cecilia Gray scored 230 and competed as an individual in the tournament.
SMWC golf traveled to Danville, Ky. on Oct. 2 and competed against Centre College. The results were not in at press time. This will be the last regular season match for the team. The National Tournament for golf is set for Oct. 10 through Oct. 12 and is to be held in Pennsylvania.
The team will compete in two scheduled matches during the spring.

SMWC golf team welcomes young players

The 2010 season of the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods golf team kicked off last weekend at Hanover College for a two-day tournament.

The team consists of six women, four of them freshmen. The freshmen are Kelsey Fuqua, Michaley Kinser, Cecilia Gray and Faith Jones. They are joined by sophomore Katelyn Gosnel and junior Danielle Rosselli.

“Since we are a young team there is room for us to grow together. We didn’t start the season with high expectations and it allows for us to compete as a team and not against each other,” said Jones.

Coach Steve Higham specifically chose local women to build the team this year, instead of scouting outside of the area. Higham said he wanted to give them the chance to play golf at the collegiate level.

“Playing on the golf team here means a lot to me,” said Rosselli. “When I was a freshman, I was the only one on the team… It is even better now that we can compete as a team.”

Their first tournament of the season at Hanover did not go as well as they would have hoped, but that is just how golf is sometimes, Gosnell said.

The Pomeroys tied for eigth place in the tournament. Fuqua was the top scorer for SMWC, finishing with a total score of 170 in 18 holes; she also tied for 20th overall. Gosnell was close behind with a 179, and Rosselli shot a 202. Jones finished in fourth for SMWC with a score of 211, and Gray shot a 221.

The golf team will compete in their next match this weekend at DePauw University in Belleville, Ind.
