The 2010 season of the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods golf team kicked off last weekend at Hanover College for a two-day tournament.

The team consists of six women, four of them freshmen. The freshmen are Kelsey Fuqua, Michaley Kinser, Cecilia Gray and Faith Jones. They are joined by sophomore Katelyn Gosnel and junior Danielle Rosselli.

“Since we are a young team there is room for us to grow together. We didn’t start the season with high expectations and it allows for us to compete as a team and not against each other,” said Jones.

Coach Steve Higham specifically chose local women to build the team this year, instead of scouting outside of the area. Higham said he wanted to give them the chance to play golf at the collegiate level.

“Playing on the golf team here means a lot to me,” said Rosselli. “When I was a freshman, I was the only one on the team… It is even better now that we can compete as a team.”

Their first tournament of the season at Hanover did not go as well as they would have hoped, but that is just how golf is sometimes, Gosnell said.

The Pomeroys tied for eigth place in the tournament. Fuqua was the top scorer for SMWC, finishing with a total score of 170 in 18 holes; she also tied for 20th overall. Gosnell was close behind with a 179, and Rosselli shot a 202. Jones finished in fourth for SMWC with a score of 211, and Gray shot a 221.

The golf team will compete in their next match this weekend at DePauw University in Belleville, Ind.

The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team held a round-robin tournament on Sept. 12 to open their fall season. The Pomeroys fell to Olney Central College andDanville Community College with scores of 6-7 and 8-9, respectively.

SMWC faced off against Olney Central for their first game of the season. The score remained at zero apiece until the third inning, when both teams put up their first runs. The visiting Olney team crossed the plate three times in the top half of the inning, but the Pomeroys added a run of their own with their at bats. Senior Katelyn Tillotson started the inning off with a single to right field; senior Chelsee Gerber came in to pinch run for Tillotson. An error allowed Gerber to advance to second base; a hit by sophomore Kelsey Rosselli caused an error, and Gerber ran to third base. A single to left field by freshman Shelby Barnett drove in Gerber and scored the first run for the Pomeroys.

Olney came back and score two more runs in the fourth inning.

The fifth inning saw SMWC score five runs and take back the lead. Senior Chelsea Baker led off the inning on a hit by pitch; Gerber came in to run for Baker. Junior Leah Miller singled to right and Gerber scored on throwing errors. Freshman Carly Painter hit a single to left first that scored Miller. Another SMWC single, hit by freshman Gina Furrey, scored Painter for the third run of the inning. Tillotson drew a walk, and then Barnett doubled to left to score Furrey and Tillotson.

With a score of 5-6 in favor of the Pomeroys going into the sixth inning, Olney didn’t give up. They went on to score two more runs, making the final score 7-6 and handing SMWC their first loss.

In the second game of the day, the Pomeroys took on Danville Community College. In the first inning, Danville scored five runs and took a quick lead. The second inning saw much of the same for Danville, as they scored four more runs. Before the end of the second inning, SMWC put up five runs. Sophomore Melana Minning singled to right field and stole two bases, allowing herself to score on a single to centerfield by Tillotson. Painter singled to center, followed by sophomore Melinda Bauer reaching on an error. Gerber added another single to center and also picked up an RBI.

The Pomeroys picked up another run, as Rosselli reached on an error by the second baseman. Goelz singled to right and Rosselli stole home. Another two runs came for SMWC in the seventh inning. Minning singled to center, followed by junior Jessica Jonas getting hit by a pitch. Bauer then singled to right field and scored Minning.

The final score of 9-8 in favor of Danville handed SMWC their second loss of the season.

The Pomeroys traveled to Booneville, Ind., on Sunday to play in the Southern Indiana Classic. They had not yet played at press time, but check out the newspaper’s website for results from the tournament.

On Sept. 25, SMWC will host Lincoln Trail Community College at home at 11 a.m.

The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College soccer team continued their season with two more wins. The first was a 3-2 victory over Franklin College, followed by a 2-0 win against St. Catharine College.

On Sept. 9, the Pomeroys faced off against the Franklin College Grizzlies at Franklin. SMWC started strong, controlling the ball for the first five minutes, but the Grizzlies managed to score first.

The Pomeroys came back in the 29th minute and scored on a series of quick passes that ended with freshman Samantha Morrison setting up senior Erin Pugh to score.

Morrison and Pugh struck again in the 37th minute when Morrison got past the goalkeeper and Pugh headed it into the goal. The Pomeroys scored again just before the end of the half on a long drive by junior Jessica Black.

The Grizzlies came out strong in the second half, scoring their second goal in the 74th minute. SMWC held onto its 3-2 lead to finish the game, handing Franklin its first loss of the season.

This win brought the Pomeroys into their second home game of the season with a record of 2-1.

SMWC hosted the Saint Catharine College Patriots on Sept. 13 on the home field. The Patriots took possession of the ball in the beginning of the game, getting off seven shots at the goal. SMWC goalkeeper senior April Baranowski blocked every shot, keeping the game at 0-0.

Morrison came through in the 34th minute when she received a pass from freshman Paige Leuthold and found the goal, making the score 1-0.

The second half showed a strong Pomeroy team, and just over two minutes into it Pugh found Morrison to score the second goal of the game. The 2-0 score was enough for SMWC, which came out with another win for the season.

The Pomeroys now have a 3-1 record on the season. They took on Brescia University on Sunday. They had not played as of press time, but look to the newspaper’s website for results of the game.

SMWC will host Adrian College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
