Big Sis/Lil’ Sis: The tradition continues

Being a junior at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College means two things: getting a little sis in the fall and getting your ring in the spring.
When I was a freshman all I could think about was Big Sis/Lil’ Sis Week.
I remember sitting in my room waiting for my big sis to come to my door so we could exchange notes each night.
This year when it came to choosing my own little I was nervous, yet excited!
I chose an awesome freshman I knew and hung out with often so the only hard part was keeping the whole thing a secret; which came to be surprisingly difficult.
The endless hours of preparing outfits and looking around for some awesome gifts while trying to stay within the new $15 daily maximum limit was hard.  Whether I stayed within budget or not is my own little secret.
The most exciting part of the whole experience was seeing how my little reacted to all of the gifts, notes, and outfits.
Even though I was horrible at keeping things a secret, I think this whole experience made up for the fact that my little knew I was her big.
I mean, I did give myself away with the awesome posters and gifts but it didn’t matter to me because I just hope that we can continue the awesome relationship that we had before Big Sis/Lil’ Sis week and the relationship that we have now that it is over!
Part of being a Woodsie is all of the amazing traditions we have.  But out of all of the traditions I would have to say that Big Sis/Lil’ Sis week is definitely one of my favorites.

The Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods College Golf team played their last match of the fall season at the Centre Invitational in Danville, KY on Oct. 2, 2010.
The match ended with a team score of 381 and they placed 4th. The team’s overall performance this season has been solid.
They have come a long way and have shown a lot of improvement in their game.
Some of the players still believe that there is room for more individual improvement.
“I liked the invitational a lot and I’m looking forward to playing again. The course was pretty easy except for being blind on every hole and hoping our ball landed in a good spot,” said freshman Michaley Kinser.
As for improvement on her game, Kinser said that she slowly improved and she believes that the team improved this season as well.
Kinser scored a 108 at the match.
Danielle Rosselli, junior, scored a 98 overall at the Centre Invitational.
“This season hasn’t gone so well for me,” said Rosselli. “At first I didn’t think I would like the invitational because the golf course was really hilly but I think that if we played the same course next year I would like it; it was different but fun!”
The other players’ scores were as follows: Katelyn Gosnell 93, Faith Jones 106, and Kelsey Fuqua 84.           The SMWC Golf team will play their next matches during the spring season starting on March 9th.

All offices back in Guerin after basement fire

The fire in Guerin on Aug. 31 caused a lot of speculation as to when the 97 year old building would be properly restored.
The fire was caused by electrical problems in the basement of Guerin.
Are other buildings on campus in danger of the same thing occurring?
Gordon Afdahl, vice president for Finance and Administration said, “The fire was an isolated case and the other historic buildings on campus are not in any danger.”
While school was out for fall break (Oct. 6-10) Guerin was fully tended to.
The clean-up and restoration was completed and the building was put back to normal. The flooring of the Master of Leadership Development office was completely removed and restored due to damage from the fire.
With all of this replacement and restoration of Guerin the overall cost was taken into consideration.
“There is no final number as to how much the repairs cost”, Afdahl said; “updates [to Guerin] would be extra.”
Precautions have been made to prevent another fire of this kind by cleaning out storage areas in the Conservatory and Guerin basements.
However, there are still areas that need to be addressed.
“If there hadn’t been things in the basement of Guerin then nothing would have burned”, Afdahl said.
Currently all of the offices that had been displaced to the library have gone back to working in Guerin.
IT relocated all of the computers and IKON copiers/printers during fall break.
Guerin is now back to “normal” or at least back to working condition.

White Violet maps eco-friendly businesses

Posted by Newsroom On November - 11 - 2010

If you are interested in how to live sustainably in Terre Haute, the Green Map isa new project that will help you do just that.
The Green Map has a full map of Terre Haute and West Terre Haute that highlights certain businesses by using points.  Each point is color coordinated and the list of businesses is then broken down by type of product/good it provides.
The businesses that are displayed are locally owned businesses, green artists, parks and green spaces, recycling facilities/re-sale stores, and eco-friendly transportation.
The idea for the Green Map was started by Laura Perticara while volunteering for the White Violet Center.
With help from Candace Minster, the fiber coordinator for the White Violet Center, and Christina Blust, graphic designer for the Sisters of Providence, the three of them created what is now the Terre Haute Green Map.
Perticara came up with the idea in November 2009 during the time when the White Violet Center starts preparing for the annual Earth Day celebration.

“The idea for the Green Map was there but there were not a lot of organizing thoughts behind it,” Minster said.
She realized that there needed to be mediating criteria that would differentiate between the corporate business and the locally-owned ones; whether they had the qualities needed to be “eco-friendly”.
The businesses that were chosen for the map had to directly offer consumers some benefit in regards to sustainability such as organic groceries and even artwork made from sustainably harvested supplies.
The Earth Day event planning for the White Violet Center led Perticara and Minster to research the Terre Haute community for businesses with the qualities needed.
“The criterion in the beginning [to be on the map] was very broad,” explained Minster.
They wanted a useful tool that would let consumers know where to go to get organic food and environmentally friendly products.  The main focus was on locally owned businesses over corporations.
The Green Map is an information packet that highlights businesses in the Terre Haute area that supported sustainability.
It has an eye-catching layout and design scheme, courtesy of Blust, and all that is left is to get the map to the consumers and the businesses.
The Terre Haute Green Map is available at the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice. However the map is still under construction and the businesses that are listed in the map are not currently carrying them.
Minster said that the Visitors and Conventions bureau of Indiana will even carry the map once it is completed.
